    Paybill or prompt: how deposits work

    There are two ways to deposit with M-Pesa. The first is the classic paybill route: open M-Pesa, choose Lipa na M-Pesa and Pay Bill, enter the sportsbook's business number and the account number it gives you (often your phone number), add the amount and confirm with your PIN. The second is a prompt sent from the sportsbook to your phone, where you only need to enter your PIN.

    Withdrawals arrive as a normal M-Pesa transfer from the operator to the registered number on your betting account, with a confirmation message as usual. Remember that 5% excise is taken from each deposit and 20% withholding tax from winnings.

    M-Pesa is secure, but betting-related scams do target it.

    • Only use paybill numbers shown on the sportsbook's licensed website or app, never numbers sent by SMS or social media.

    • Use the same phone number for your M-Pesa and betting account so withdrawals are not blocked.
