Sports betting is legalized state by state. More than 30 states and Washington, D.C. allow online sportsbooks, and you must be physically located in a legal state to place a bet.
There is no national sports betting licence in America. Since the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, each state has decided for itself, and more than 30 states plus Washington, D.C. now allow online sportsbooks. Each one licenses operators through its own gaming regulator, and you can only place a bet while you are physically inside a state that permits it. Every legal app checks your location before accepting a wager, so travelling across a state line can switch betting off.
That makes availability the first filter on any US ranking. The three sportsbooks below are all licensed by state regulators, but none of them operates everywhere: BetMGM covers the widest footprint of the three, followed by bet365 and BetRivers. Use our state pages to see which of them is live where you are. The legal age is 21 in most states, with a few allowing 18.
BetMGM tops our US table with a score of 9.1. Its biggest draw is MGM Rewards, which links your sports betting to points you can use across MGM’s resorts, and its live betting coverage is strong. The trade-offs are an app that is slower than the market leaders and promotion terms that need careful reading.
bet365 scores 8.9 and has the strongest odds and market depth in our US ratings. It is the pick if you bet on soccer as well as American sports, or if you want a deep in-play menu and early payout offers. Its weakness is reach: it is licensed in fewer states than BetMGM. BetRivers, at 8.6, is the most approachable of the three, with a simple layout, the iRush Rewards loyalty programme and fast PayPal and Venmo withdrawals in our checks.
NFL Sundays and college football drive most of the action in the autumn, followed by the NBA, March Madness, MLB and the NHL. Same-game parlays and player props have become the core product on US apps, so compare how many of these each sportsbook offers for the leagues you actually watch, not just the headline numbers.
Licensed US sportsbooks offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and you can usually set them in the account menu in a minute or two. Self-exclusion is run by each state rather than nationally, so if you want a break across every licensed app, look up your state regulator’s programme.
If betting stops feeling like entertainment, call or text the National Problem Gambling Helpline on 1-800-GAMBLER. It is free, confidential and available around the clock.
Yes, but it is regulated state by state. Since the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized online sports betting, while others allow retail betting only or have not legalized it at all.
In most states you must be 21 to place a bet. A handful of states, including Kentucky, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Wyoming, allow betting from 18.
Yes. Licensed sportsbooks use geolocation, so what matters is where you are physically located when you place the bet, not where you live.
We score every operator on bonuses, odds, mobile app quality, market depth, payout speed and customer support, then re-check each listing regularly. Only state-licensed operators appear in our US rankings.
Offshore sites are not licensed by any US state and offer no consumer protection. We only list sportsbooks that hold a license from a US state regulator.
