Online sports betting is legal in South Africa for adults 18 and over with bookmakers licensed by a provincial gambling board, such as the Western Cape or Mpumalanga. Online casino games remain illegal.
In South Africa, online sports betting is legal for adults aged 18 and over, but only with a bookmaker licensed by one of the nine provincial gambling boards. Most of the brands in our ranking hold licences from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, while 10bet is licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator and PlayTSOGO holds licences in both provinces. Each licence number appears in our reviews, so you can check it with the issuing board.
The National Gambling Act still makes online casino games illegal, and a Remote Gambling Bill to modernise the rules nationally is still before Parliament. Occasional recreational winnings are generally not taxed by SARS.
Seven bookmakers make our South African list. Hollywoodbets leads on 8.7, with a sign-up free bet that does not need a deposit, a network of retail branches and strong local football and horse racing coverage. Betway, on 8.5, has the cleanest app and our top rating for football, and 10bet matches its score with a two-deposit welcome package.
The remaining four compete mainly on bonus structure. YesPlay stands out for low 7x wagering and a R20 minimum deposit. PlayTSOGO is backed by the Tsogo Sun casino group, Betshezi offers the largest deposit bonus with 5x wagering, though it is a newer brand, and JabulaBets spreads its sports bonus across several deposits. Bigger headline numbers do not always mean better value, so compare the wagering and the minimum odds before you claim anything.
Local payment options are a real point of difference here. Ozow, Capitec Pay and Instant EFT let you deposit straight from your bank app, and almost every bookmaker on the list accepts 1Voucher, OTT and Blu vouchers bought at shops and petrol stations. Several also take cash at retail stores, and Betshezi even lets you deposit with mobile airtime.
Withdrawal times vary more than deposits. Betshezi quoted up to 12 hours by Ozow or card in our checks, Hollywoodbets within one business day, and JabulaBets up to three days by EFT.
The Premiership and the English Premier League drive most South African betting, with Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates the big local draws. Springbok rugby and Proteas cricket matter just as much on the big weekends, and horse racing peaks around the Durban July. Hollywoodbets and Betway both stream live sport, which makes in-play betting on these events easier.
Responsible gambling is where many South African sites have most room to improve, and our ratings show it. Use the deposit limits and time-outs in your account, and if you need to stop, the National Responsible Gambling Programme runs self-exclusion and free counselling on 0800 006 008.
Yes. Adults aged 18 and over may bet online with bookmakers licensed by a provincial gambling board. Online casino games are not legal.
Provincial gambling boards issue bookmaker licences, for example the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board and the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. The National Gambling Board oversees the system nationally.
Search the National Gambling Board's Verified Gambling Operators portal and compare it with the provincial licence number shown on the betting site.
