Bank transfers and EFT at South African sportsbooks
Bank transfer is the most traditional way to move money to and from a betting account in South Africa, and it remains the standard method for withdrawals at almost every licensed sportsbook. There are two kinds. A standard EFT is a normal transfer from your online banking, which may take one or more business days to clear between banks. Instant EFT, offered through services such as Ozow, Capitec Pay and newer real-time options like PayShap, lets you pay from your bank account with the money arriving almost immediately.
Because bank transfers are linked to a verified account in your name, they are also the method that most clearly satisfies FICA rules, which is one reason licensed bookmakers prefer to pay winnings this way.
The best bank transfer betting sites
All seven licensed sportsbooks in our South African ranking support bank payments in some form. Hollywoodbets leads, accepting EFT and instant EFT from R10 and processing withdrawals within 1 business day. It also supports ABSA Pay and Capitec Pay, which suits customers of those two banks.
Betway, in second, accepts EFT, instant EFT and standard bank transfers and pays out within up to 24 hours on instant methods. 10bet, in third, accepts EFT and instant EFT and quotes up to 24 hours for payouts. YesPlay supports EFT and bank transfer with payouts of up to 48 hours.
Further down, PlayTSOGO quotes 24 to 48 hours by Instant EFT, Betshezi supports instant EFT and PayShap, and JabulaBets accepts EFT and bank transfer but quotes up to 3 days for withdrawals.
Avoiding delays with bank payments
Most problems with bank transfers come down to small details:
- Use the exact payment reference the sportsbook gives you for manual EFT deposits, or the money may not be matched to your account.
- Make sure the bank account name matches your betting account exactly.
- Allow extra time for withdrawals requested on Fridays, weekends and public holidays.
- Upload a recent bank statement or confirmation letter early if the site asks for proof of account.
Why slower can be sensible
A standard EFT is not the fastest way to deposit, but the wait is no bad thing: it gives you time to reconsider an impulsive top-up. For withdrawals, sending winnings to your bank account promptly helps keep them out of reach of the next bet. Recreational winnings are generally not taxed by SARS, but professional gamblers are taxed on their profits, so keep records if betting is a regular income source.
