How we ranked them

We used the iOS and Android apps of licensed sportsbooks in the US and scored them on speed, stability, navigation and the features they share with the desktop site. Only books with a native app qualify.

What to look for

  • Native apps on both the App Store and Google Play
  • Face ID or fingerprint login
  • Push notifications for bet results and price changes
  • Deposits and withdrawals inside the app

Mobile betting in the US

Almost all legal online betting in the US happens on phones. Every licensed sportsbook offers native iOS and Android apps, and in most states the app is the main product rather than an add-on to a desktop site. That is partly because of geolocation: US apps must confirm you are physically in a legal state before each betting session, and on a phone they can do this using location services and Wi-Fi data.

Geolocation is the most common source of frustration. VPNs, some corporate networks and locations near a state border can cause a failed check. If an app refuses to let you bet, turn off any VPN, enable location services and connect to Wi-Fi; some books on desktop also ask you to install a small location plug-in.

Comparing the three apps

BetMGM is first on overall score, with an app rating of 9.0. It offers a deep range of markets, strong live betting and easy access to MGM Rewards, all in one app. Its weakness is speed: our review notes the app is slower than the market leaders, which is most noticeable when betting live.

bet365 is second with an app rating of 8.7. It packs in more markets and live events than the others, but its design is dense, so newcomers can find it overwhelming. BetRivers, with an app rating of 8.4, is the simplest of the three: a clean, beginner-friendly layout that makes it easy to find a game and place a bet, with fewer same-game parlay options as the trade-off.

What to check before you download

It is also worth knowing that you can download a sportsbook app and open an account from anywhere; the location check only applies when you try to place a bet. Some bettors set up accounts at home and deposit only once they are in a legal state.

  • Download only from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and check that the app lists your state.
  • Some sportsbooks have a separate app version for each state; make sure you have the right one.
  • Turn on Face ID or fingerprint login to keep your account secure.
  • Look for limit settings in the app menu; all three apps let you set deposit limits from your phone.

Phones make betting easy, so set boundaries

Having a sportsbook in your pocket makes it easy to place one more bet. Notifications for odds boosts and promotions can be turned off in the app settings, and doing so is a simple way to bet when you choose rather than when you are prompted. You must be 21 or over in most legal states to open an account.
