In-game betting on US sports
Live betting now accounts for a large share of the action at US sportsbooks. The structure of American sports suits it: the NFL has natural breaks between plays and drives, the NBA has timeouts and quarter breaks, and baseball has a pause between every pitch. Sportsbooks use those breaks to update spreads, totals and props continuously, and some offer micro-markets on the next play, drive or pitch.
Two features turn live betting from guesswork into something more informed. Live streaming lets you watch the event in the sportsbook app, and cash out lets you settle a bet early for a price set by the book. All three sportsbooks in this ranking offer both, although which events are streamed depends on the rights each book holds; major US leagues are often not streamed, while soccer, tennis and other international sports more often are.
Baseball deserves a mention: with a pause between every pitch, MLB has become one of the busiest live betting sports in the US, with markets on the result of an at-bat, the next inning and the run line updated throughout the game.
BetMGM, bet365 and BetRivers in play
BetMGM tops this ranking. Strong live betting coverage is one of its main strengths, with in-game lines on the main US sports and a good range of props. Its one weakness here is the app, which is slower than the market leaders; in live betting, a few seconds can mean a price changes before your bet is accepted.
bet365 is second, with what our review calls unmatched live markets and sharp odds. Its in-play menus are the deepest in our US data, and its early payout offers can settle soccer and some US sports bets early when your team gets far enough ahead. BetRivers is third: its live section is simpler, which suits newcomers, but it offers fewer combinations for experienced in-play bettors.
Live betting tips
- Expect delays: even TV broadcasts are behind the live action, and sportsbooks suspend markets during key moments.
- Cash out is convenient, but the offer includes the book's margin; use it to manage risk, not as a habit.
- Look for live markets on sports you know well, where you can spot momentum changes faster than the odds.
- Turn on bet confirmation settings if your app allows accepting price changes automatically.
Staying in control
Live betting is fast, and fast betting is where losses can escalate. Decide your stake for a game before it starts, and use the time-out, deposit limit and reality-check tools in your account. Remember that you must be physically in a legal state, and at least 21 in most of them, for every bet you place, including in-play.
