Is sports betting legal in Alaska?
Sports betting is not legal in Alaska. There are no licensed sportsbooks, no retail betting windows and no regulated apps anywhere in the state. Alaska also has no commercial casinos and no state lottery, so gambling is limited mainly to charitable gaming such as pull-tabs and bingo, plus some tribal bingo halls.
Lawmakers have introduced bills in recent years. A 2025 House bill proposed placing sports wagering under the Department of Revenue with a limited number of online licences, and it received a committee hearing without a vote. As of late 2026 no sports betting legislation has passed either chamber, and there is no launch timetable.
Why Alaska is a hard case for legalisation
Alaska's politics around gambling are less about moral opposition and more about priorities. The state relies heavily on oil revenue and the Permanent Fund Dividend, so the pressure to find new tax sources has historically been weaker than in many Lower 48 states. Supporters of legal betting point to fiscal shortfalls and to residents already betting through unregulated channels.
Geography also matters. With no neighbouring US state, Alaskans cannot simply drive across a border to place a legal bet the way residents of many other non-legal states can.
Any future framework would also have to work for a population spread across remote communities, many of them reachable only by air. Mobile betting would be the only practical model, which raises questions about how age and identity checks, problem gambling services and geolocation would function in places with limited connectivity. Those practical issues, alongside the usual debates over tax rates and licence numbers, help explain why bills have tended to stall in committee rather than reach a floor vote.
Betting legally as an Alaskan
Residents who travel to a legal state can open an account with a licensed sportsbook and bet while physically located there. Washington offers retail betting at tribal casinos, while Arizona, Colorado and many other states have full online markets. Once you return home, geolocation will block new wagers, although you can usually still log in to withdraw funds.
We strongly advise against offshore sportsbooks. They hold no US licence, offer no dispute resolution and may refuse to pay out. Our rankings only include operators that are licensed in the states where they take bets.
