Offshore sportsbooks that accept players from Georgia are not licensed in the US and offer no consumer protection.

Is sports betting legal in Georgia?

No. Sports betting is not legal in Georgia. There are no licensed sportsbooks, no casino betting counters and no regulated mobile apps in the state. The Georgia Lottery, which funds the HOPE scholarship and pre-K programmes, is the main form of legal gambling.

Lawmakers have debated sports betting nearly every year since 2019, often with the backing of Atlanta's professional teams. Most proposals rely on a constitutional amendment, which needs a two-thirds vote in each chamber before going to voters. In the 2026 session that effort fell short again: the House rejected the main sports betting resolution on Crossover Day in March, so there is no sports betting question on the November 2026 ballot. The next realistic opportunity is the 2027 session.

What Georgians can do legally

If you want to bet with a licensed sportsbook, you need to be physically located in a legal state. Tennessee has a mobile-only market, North Carolina has a full online market, and Florida allows betting through the Seminole Tribe's app. Open an account while visiting, and remember that the app will block wagers once you return to Georgia, though you can still log in and withdraw.

Offshore sportsbooks are not a legal alternative. They are unregulated in the US, offer no consumer protection and can refuse withdrawals without consequence.

  • Tennessee: legal online betting just across the northern border from Chattanooga.
  • North Carolina: legal online betting, including several brands we review.
  • Florida: one legal app run by the Seminole Tribe.
  • Alabama and South Carolina: no legal sports betting.

Why it matters to Georgia sports fans

Atlanta is home to the Falcons, Braves, Hawks and Atlanta United, while the Georgia Bulldogs are one of the dominant forces in college football. The teams have argued that regulated betting would protect integrity and keep tax revenue in the state; opponents, including many religious groups, argue that it would expand gambling harm. Daily fantasy sports operate in a legal grey area and are not the same as regulated wagering.

Disagreement over where the money should go has also slowed progress. Some lawmakers want tax revenue to flow into the HOPE scholarship and pre-K programmes like lottery proceeds, while others have pushed for funds for problem gambling services, rural healthcare or other priorities. Combined with the supermajority needed for a constitutional amendment, those disputes have repeatedly left proposals short of the votes required.
