Yes. Indiana sports betting has been legal since September 2019, when the first wagers were taken at the state's casinos, and online betting followed in October 2019. Governor Eric Holcomb signed the enabling law in May 2019, making Indiana one of the first Midwestern states to open a regulated market. The Indiana Gaming Commission regulates every operator, and the minimum age is 21.
Unlike some early markets, Indiana allowed remote registration from the start, so residents have always been able to open an account from home. Online operators work through partnerships with Indiana's casinos and racinos.
BetMGM, bet365 and BetRivers, all three sportsbooks we review, are licensed in Indiana. That gives Hoosier bettors a full choice, from BetMGM's wide range of same-game parlays to bet365's live streaming and in-play markets and BetRivers' simple layout and frequent odds boosts.
Geolocation is mandatory. Indiana's position, bordering Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky, means many residents commute across state lines. Each of those neighbours has its own legal market, and your app will follow the rules of whichever state you are physically in, which can affect available promotions and markets.
Indiana allows wagering on college sports, and the state's regulator approves new events and leagues on an ongoing basis. The Indiana Gaming Commission also runs a voluntary exclusion programme that covers both casinos and online sportsbooks; once you enrol, licensed operators must close your access.
Winnings are subject to Indiana's flat state income tax plus any applicable county tax, as well as federal tax.
Retail sportsbooks operate at casinos across the state, from Horseshoe Hammond and the Gary lakefront to French Lick and the riverboat properties along the Ohio River. Many Chicago-area bettors cross into northwest Indiana on game days, which is one reason Indiana's handle is high for a state of its size.
Basketball runs deep in Indiana. The Pacers and the Fever, whose crowds have grown enormously in recent seasons, share the spotlight with the Colts in the NFL and with college programmes at Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame. March is usually the busiest month of the betting year in the state, and Indianapolis also hosts the Indy 500 every May, a major event for motorsport bettors.
If gambling stops being fun, the Indiana problem gambling helpline is available at 1-800-994-8448, and 1-800-GAMBLER also offers support around the clock.
