Yes. Iowa legalised sports betting in 2019 when Governor Kim Reynolds signed the authorising bill in May, and the first legal bets were placed on 15 August 2019. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission regulates the market, and you must be 21 or older to bet.
Online operators partner with the state's licensed casinos. For the first period, Iowa required in-person registration at a casino, but that requirement ended at the start of 2021, and you can now sign up entirely through an app.
All three of the sportsbooks we cover are licensed in Iowa: BetMGM, bet365 and BetRivers. That is a strong line-up for a state of Iowa's size, giving bettors real competition on odds, promotions and loyalty rewards.
As in every regulated state, geolocation is required. If you live near Omaha, Moline or the Minnesota border, make sure your phone confirms you are on the Iowa side before you try to bet, because Nebraska and Minnesota do not offer statewide mobile wagering.
Iowa permits betting on college sports, including the Hawkeyes and Cyclones, but player prop markets on college athletes are not offered. Integrity is a particularly live topic in Iowa: a 2023 state investigation into sports betting by student-athletes at Iowa and Iowa State drew national attention and led to wider debate about how leagues and regulators police betting by people close to the games.
Winnings are taxable at state and federal level, and licensed sportsbooks will report larger payouts.
Iowa's market is built around its casino network, with each licensed casino able to partner with online operators. Retail sportsbooks are spread across the state, from Council Bluffs and Sioux City in the west to Davenport, Dubuque and the Quad Cities on the Mississippi. That spread means most Iowans live within a reasonable drive of an in-person counter, even though the vast majority of wagers are now placed on mobile.
Without a major professional franchise, Iowa's betting calendar revolves around college sport, with the annual Cy-Hawk football game and Big Ten and Big 12 basketball among the highlights. Many residents also follow Kansas City, Chicago and Minnesota teams, and the Hawkeyes women's basketball programme has drawn record crowds and national betting interest in recent seasons.
Iowa's problem gambling helpline, 1-800-BETS-OFF, offers free and confidential support, and the state runs a self-exclusion programme that covers licensed sportsbooks.
