Is sports betting legal in Montana?

Yes. Montana legalised sports betting in 2019, and the Montana Lottery launched its Sports Bet Montana platform in March 2020. The minimum age is 18, one of the lowest in the country. Montana's model is very different from most states, however: the Lottery operates sports betting as a state-run service rather than licensing a range of commercial operators.

Bets can be placed at self-service kiosks or through the Sports Bet Montana app, but app wagers are only accepted while you are physically inside a licensed location, typically a bar, tavern or casino that holds a Lottery sports betting licence. There are several hundred such locations around the state.

Why the big national sportsbooks are absent

Because Sports Bet Montana holds the statewide franchise, none of the three sportsbooks we review, BetMGM, bet365 and BetRivers, is licensed in Montana. Tribal nations in the state can also offer sports betting at their own casinos under their compacts.

With a single state platform, there are no competing apps to compare odds against, and pricing tends to be less sharp than in open markets. Neighbouring Wyoming has a competitive statewide mobile market, including BetMGM, for bettors who are physically there.

Lawmakers have periodically debated whether to open Montana to private operators or allow statewide mobile wagering, but the Lottery model has remained in place. Supporters of the current system point to the revenue it returns to the state and the business it brings to local bars and taverns; critics argue it leaves Montanans with weaker odds and fewer options than residents of neighbouring states.

Placing a legal bet in Montana

To bet through the app, download Sports Bet Montana, register and verify your identity, then visit a licensed location. The app uses geofencing to confirm you are inside an approved venue before your wager is accepted; you can browse lines from home, but you cannot bet there. Kiosk and app wagers are subject to maximum stake limits set by the Lottery.

Winnings are taxable at state and federal level.

Griz, Cats and responsible gambling

Montana has no major professional franchise, so the Brawl of the Wild between the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats is the biggest betting event of the year, and both programmes are strong in FCS football. Many residents also follow the Seahawks, Broncos and other regional teams.

Because Montana allows betting from age 18, the Lottery places particular emphasis on responsible play. If you need support, call 1-800-GAMBLER for free, confidential help.
