Is sports betting legal in Washington?
Yes, but only at tribal casinos. Washington passed a law in 2020 allowing tribes to add sports wagering to their gaming compacts, and the first bets were placed at tribal properties in September 2021. The Washington State Gambling Commission negotiates the compact amendments with each tribe, while day-to-day oversight is shared with tribal gaming agencies.
Sports betting is not permitted at the state's commercial card rooms or racetracks, and there is no statewide online market. Many participating tribal venues admit bettors from 18, although individual casinos may set a higher age limit, so check before you travel.
Why statewide mobile betting has not arrived
Washington's tribes hold exclusive rights to sports wagering under the 2020 law, and any expansion to statewide mobile betting would require new legislation and compact amendments. Proposals to open the market to commercial operators, including card rooms, have been resisted by tribal gaming interests, who argue that the current model protects revenue that funds tribal government services. Supporters of change point to the money flowing to offshore sites. Until a compromise emerges, betting in Washington will stay tied to casino property.
Mobile betting only on casino property
Washington allows sportsbook apps, but they work only while you are physically on the premises of a tribal casino. The geofence switches the app off as soon as you leave the property, so you cannot bet from home in Seattle, Spokane or Tacoma. None of the three US sportsbooks we rank holds a Washington licence.
Washington also takes illegal online gambling more seriously than most states, so we especially urge residents to avoid offshore sites. Lawmakers considered a bill in 2026 to allow several mobile operators on tribal lands and to lift the ban on betting on in-state college teams, but we have not been able to confirm that it became law.
In-state college teams and nearby options
Under the current rules, tribal sportsbooks do not take bets on Washington college teams, including the Huskies and Cougars. Professional teams are fully available.
If you want to bet from a phone, Oregon offers statewide mobile betting through its Lottery, and Portland is only a short drive from Vancouver. Idaho, to the east, has no legal sports betting. Wherever you go, the app must confirm you are inside the licensed state. Washington has no personal income tax, but federal tax rules apply to winnings.
Seahawks, Mariners and responsible play
The Seahawks, Mariners, Kraken, Sounders and Storm give Washington a full professional calendar. Washington funds problem gambling services through its Health Care Authority, and free, confidential help is available through 1-800-GAMBLER and the state's own Problem Gambling Helpline.
