Is sports betting legal in British Columbia?
Yes, but only through one online operator. In British Columbia the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), a Crown corporation, conducts and manages gambling on the province's behalf, and its PlayNow site is the only legal place to bet on sport online. PlayNow added single-event wagers as soon as Bill C-218 came into force in August 2021, so B.C. residents can bet on individual NHL, NFL, NBA and soccer games rather than only parlays.
Gambling in the province is overseen by the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch, which regulates BCLC and the wider industry. You must be 19 or older to open a PlayNow account, and you need to be in B.C. when you bet.
Because copycat sites sometimes borrow familiar branding, it is worth checking that you are on playnow.com itself and that the page names BCLC as the operator before you deposit. PlayNow also sells lottery tickets and runs casino games, so one account covers every legal online gambling product in the province.
Why none of our sportsbooks are listed for B.C.
We only rank sportsbooks that are licensed where you live. None of the four Canadian brands we review, LeoVegas, 888sport, TonyBet and Stake, holds a licence to take bets from British Columbia, because the province does not license private online operators. Those brands serve Ontario or Alberta through separate regulated sites, and they are not a legal option for someone betting from Vancouver or Kelowna.
Many offshore sites still advertise to British Columbians. BCLC's own planning documents name these unlicensed operators as a drain on its revenue, and they sit outside any Canadian complaints process. If something goes wrong with a withdrawal there, you have no regulator to turn to, so we do not recommend them.
Will B.C. open a private betting market?
As of late 2026 there is no sign of it. Alberta's decision to license private operators renewed the debate, but the B.C. government has said BCLC already holds roughly half of the province's online gambling market and has shown no interest in following Ontario's model. Its focus instead is on replacing the PlayNow platform with a more competitive sports betting product. We will update this page if the province announces any change.
Canucks, Lions and help when you need it
The Vancouver Canucks dominate the betting calendar from October to spring, the BC Lions carry the province's CFL hopes through summer and autumn, and the Vancouver Whitecaps bring MLS action. PlayNow covers all three, along with the major U.S. leagues and international events.
BCLC created GameSense, the responsible gambling programme now used by several other Canadian lotteries, and PlayNow includes deposit limits and self-exclusion. If you are worried about your betting, the Gambling Support BC line on 1-888-795-6111 is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day.
