Sports betting rules in the Northwest Territories

Residents of the Northwest Territories can bet legally on sport, but only at a retail counter. The territory does not run an online sportsbook and has not licensed any private operator, so the legal product is Sport Select from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, which the NWT offers as a member of that lottery partnership. Tickets are available from lottery retailers in Yellowknife, Hay River, Inuvik and other communities.

Sport Select gained single-game betting in late 2021 after Bill C-218 came into force, so you can now back one NHL or NFL result without building a parlay. The legal age is 19.

Placing a bet is straightforward. You choose your picks and stake, pay at the counter, and keep the printed ticket, which is your only proof of the wager. Odds are fixed when the ticket is printed, and winning tickets are validated at a lottery retailer, so check the WCLC prize-claim rules for larger amounts.

Can you bet online from the NWT?

Not with a licensed sportsbook. None of the four Canadian brands we rank, LeoVegas, 888sport, TonyBet and Stake, is licensed to accept bets from the territory; their regulated sites serve Ontario or Alberta only and use geolocation to block bets placed elsewhere. Provincial lottery sites in neighbouring Alberta and British Columbia are also restricted to people physically in those provinces.

Sites that accept NWT residents without a Canadian licence operate outside the law and are not answerable to any territorial or provincial authority. If you want regulated protection, buying a Sport Select ticket is currently the only route.

What could change

The Government of the Northwest Territories has not announced plans for online sports betting or a private licensing system as of late 2026. Alberta's new market does not extend north of the 60th parallel, so for now Yellowknife bettors remain in a retail-only system.

Residents who fly to Edmonton can use AGLC-registered sportsbooks while they are on the ground in Alberta, but those accounts stop working for betting as soon as the phone's location returns to the territory.

Hockey in the North and where to find help

Hockey is the dominant sport across the territory, and the Edmonton Oilers have a strong following in the NWT thanks to the direct links between Yellowknife and Edmonton. The CFL's Elks and Stampeders are popular for the same reason, and both appear on Sport Select.

The NWT Help Line, 1-800-661-0844, is free, confidential and open around the clock to anyone who wants to talk about gambling or any other concern.
