PEI sports betting laws explained

Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province, and its betting market is just as compact. The only legal online sportsbook for Islanders is PROLINE+, run by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation on behalf of PEI and the other three Atlantic provinces. Single-game betting has been available since August 2021, when the federal change under Bill C-218 took effect, and paper PRO-LINE tickets are still sold at retailers.

The PEI Lotteries Commission oversees lottery gaming in the province. You must be 19 or older to bet on PROLINE+ or buy a PRO-LINE ticket.

For most Islanders the practical choice is between the convenience of an online account and the simplicity of a ticket bought with the groceries. PROLINE+ lets you follow odds as they move and settle bets automatically, while a paper PRO-LINE slip suits anyone who prefers to keep betting occasional and cash-based. Both are equally legal.

What this means for our sportsbook rankings

Our Canadian rankings include only operators licensed where the reader lives. PEI does not license private online sportsbooks, so LeoVegas, 888sport, TonyBet and Stake are not legal options from Charlottetown or Summerside; their licences cover Ontario, Alberta or both. Unlicensed offshore sites may accept Islanders, but they are not accountable to any Canadian authority and we do not recommend them.

Any sign of change?

PEI has not announced plans to open a private market as of late 2026. Given that online betting is shared across the four Atlantic provinces through one corporation, a regional decision would likely be needed before any commercial licensing could happen.

Until then, Islanders who enjoy a bet can make the most of the legal tools on offer. Setting a weekly deposit limit on PROLINE+ before the hockey season starts, and treating any stake as the cost of entertainment rather than an investment, keeps betting in its proper place.

Harness racing, the Islanders and staying in control

Horse racing has deep roots on the Island, and harness racing in Charlottetown, especially during Old Home Week, remains one of the most popular betting events of the year. Pari-mutuel racing is regulated separately from sports betting. On the ice, the Charlottetown Islanders play in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, and NHL loyalty is split mostly between the Maple Leafs, Canadiens and Bruins.

PEI's Problem Gambling Help Line, 1-855-255-4255, offers free and confidential support. PROLINE+ players can also set deposit limits or self-exclude through their Atlantic Lottery account.
