What makes a good betting app in the UK
Most UK bets are now placed on a phone, and the gap between a smooth betting app and a clunky one is obvious within a few minutes. We tested each app on iOS and Android, looking at how fast it loads on mobile data, how easy it is to find a market, how bet slips and cash out behave, and whether safer-gambling tools such as deposit limits are easy to reach.
Eight of the nine UK sportsbooks we review have dedicated iOS and Android apps. Highbet is left out of this ranking because we do not review it as an app-based sportsbook; its site can still be used in a mobile browser.
LeoVegas leads on design
LeoVegas earns first place with an app rating of 9.5, the highest on our UK list. It was built mobile-first, and that shows: navigation is clear, the bet slip is easy to edit, and in-play markets update without lag. The trade-off is fewer ongoing promotions than the biggest UK bookmakers.
BetMGM is second. Its app is rated 9.0 and offers live streaming, cash out and a strong range of football multiples. It can feel slower than LeoVegas when moving between sports, but the depth of features makes up for it for most users.
Unibet and Betway are tied on 8.8 for their apps. Betway's is one of the cleanest and simplest, which makes it a good starting point for newcomers, while Unibet's app is well organised for football and racing. bet365's app (8.7) has more markets than any other, but its dense design rewards experienced users more than beginners.
App features worth checking
Before you settle on one app, try these features on a live event:
- Face ID or fingerprint login, to keep your account secure.
- Apple Pay or Google Pay deposits for quick top-ups from your phone.
- In-app live streaming and how much battery and data it uses.
- Push notifications you can control, including turning off promotional alerts.
- Quick access to deposit limits, time-outs and the self-exclusion page.
Download from official sources only
Download betting apps only from the App Store, Google Play or the bookmaker's own website. Apps from unlicensed operators can appear in search results, but they offer none of the protections a Gambling Commission licence provides. Having a betting app on your phone makes it easy to bet at any moment, so consider switching off notifications and setting a deposit limit as soon as you install it.
